1875-1955 → James Henry Osborne Amess was a British born Canadian artist who painted in oil, pastel and watercolour; mostly portraits, still lifes and landscapes.
He attended LCC Central School of Arts and Crafts, and Goldsmiths Institute, both in London, England. Amess and his family moved to Canada in 1910 and settled on the west coast one year later.
He won a gold medal for his work at the Provincial Exhibition in 1919. In 1939 his work was included in the National Exhibition held in Toronto, and in 1940 his work was part of the Traveling Loan Collection. He and Fred Amess held a duo exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1941, and he later had a solo exhibition there in 1945. He exhibited work in numerous BC Artists exhibitions and with numerous annual exhibitions held by the BC Society of Fine Arts. Amess died at the age of 79.

The Canadian Art Preservation Foundation posts short biographies and information on artists and artwork from its collection in a not-so-subtle attempt to capture your attention and interest in our mission, but we also just want to keep this artwork in view. We are excited about the art we collect and want to share it with you. CAPF is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the artwork of Canada’s superstar artists for future generations to examine, study and exhibit – the ones you know and the ones you might not know so well. We accept artwork, journals, notes, letters, exhibition catalogues and anything else that might comprise a visual and/or intellectual “portrait” (ahem, please pardon the pun) of a particular artist.
